A Bombard or Bombarde (in French) is a double reed woodwind musical instrument. The sound of a bombard is quite powerful and may surprise you initially, especially when the player (talabarder) is a learner. It requires a lot of lip pressure and breath control to play a melody line on these instruments. But in the right hands, the sound created can seem amusing and evocative of earlier times. Mostly practitioners play in groups where together they produce a rich tapestry of sound. Bombards are often found playing along with a bagpipe called a biniou kozh (“ancient bagpipe”), which plays an octave above the bombard. The bombard calls, and the biniou responds. The bombard requires so much lip pressure and breath control that a talabarder can rarely play a sustained melody line. The biniou plays the melody continuously, while the bombard takes breaks, establishing the call-and-response pattern.
